About Jessica Rachel McVicar

Above, is an example of my Visual Merchandising group project outcome, in collaboration with Selfridges. It was a live, working brief and we produced the idea of a 'Virtually Muted' world where consumers could switch off from the outside world whilst inside our concept. This is a Sketch Up animation of how our concept would look and this was presented to the Selfridges team.

Ever since I was young, I have had a real interest in the fashion industry. I can remember binge watching The Rachel Zoe project and being mesmerised by all of the clothes she wore and dressed her clients in. From then on, I knew that I wanted to work in the fashion industry in some capacity.

I didn't think studying fashion was something that was going to be recognised, but after doing plenty of research on university courses, I realised that there were plenty of options. I am so pleased that I chose the course at BCU and it has helped me to get lots of work experience within the fashion industry already.

I have a real interest in Fashion Buying and have undertaken many work experience opportunities throughout my time at university. Some of my favourite placements include Visual Merchandising at Liberty London head office, Womenswear Buying at ASOS head office and Entertainment and Influencer Marketing at Adidas head office. Each of these placements have allowed me to explore different industry roles and gain an insight into the fashion industry first hand.

My time at Birmingham City has been great and I have loved the set up of the Fashion Business course - learning new industry roles within each module has been crucial in helping me to develop new and existing skills that will be vital for a job in industry after graduation and has helped me to decide what career path I would like to follow.

I have been able to take part in plenty of university trips, both abroad to Paris and Florence and day trips to London. I was also fortunate to take part in a six month Erasmus+ study programme in Copenhagen last year, where I studied Brand Design at KEA and was able to develop both academically and personally. I also was able to travel while I was studying there and visited places such as Sweden, Barcelona, Lisbon and Amsterdam to name a few.

I am looking forward to the new challenges I will face once I graduate and developing my skills even further within industry.
