Signature Project

Ocean Plastic

My initial idea for this project was to look deeper into sea plastic pollution. I wanted to know to what extent pollution was affecting the creatures that live in our oceans and the sea as an ecosystem. As I progressed through this journey I became more interested in the shapes and lives of sea creatures over the more devastating pollution side of the project. I wanted to recreate the organic curves and features creatures like Octopus and Jellyfish have but to keep to my theme of pollution I made sure the majority of the materials I used were plastic based and a large proportion was actual waste that was going to be discarded. I chose to use net as the base for my garments because it gave a more organic and fragile feeling much like the soft bodies of sea creatures, this also relevant as fishing nets make up to 86% of the large plastic pollution.
